Joining School in Foundation 1 (FS1)

Children enter Foundation 1 (FS1) at the beginning of the school year in which they are turning 4. All children starting FS1 will have the choice of two sessions, morning sessions 8.45 until 11.45 or afternoon sessions 12.15 until 3.15. To apply for a FS1 place, parents should contact the school directly for an admissions meeting to enroll the child. A transition plan will be put into place to support your child starting school.

The admission limit for St Ann’s Junior & Infant School is 60, so sometimes places are refused because the school is full.  Children enter Foundation Stage 2 (FS2) at the beginning of the school year in which they are turning 5. All children start FS2 at the start of the school year in September and they attend full time from day 1.

Children will be assessed using the new Reception Baseline Assessment. This is being piloted in school this academic year before becoming statutory in 2020. Click the link below to learn more about it.


All parents, as part of Rotherham Local Authority’s admissions policy have to apply to the Local Authority (LA) for admission to the school of their choice. Parents have to fill in an application form for a place for their child. Places are then allocated by the LA.

Joining the school after September of FS2

Occasionally during the School year children need to change school because of moving house or other reasons. School places are managed and allocated by the Local Authority, so parents wishing to gain a place for their child at St Ann’s will need to get in touch with the LA Admissions Team at Riverside House, Rotherham.

Admission to Year 7

After Year 6, pupils will transfer to a local secondary school/academy. Parents have to apply for their child to attend a school of their choice.

The LA will contact Parents through the post to their home address in the Autumn term of Y6 asking them to name 3 choices of secondary provision.

A letter will be sent from the LA with information about school places that have been allocated in March of Year 6. There is an Appeals process that can be followed if parents are unhappy with the allocation.
