SEND - Special Educations Needs and Disabilities
From September 1st 2014 the new SEND Code of Practice came into effect.
The aim of the reforms were to join provision across education, health and care and include children from birth to 25. The Code of Practice states that intervention should be made at the earliest possible point in a young person’s life and they and their parents should be fully involved in decisions regarding their support and outcomes.
“Teachers are responsible and accountable for the progress and development of the pupils in their class, even where pupils access support from teaching assistants or specialist staff” DfE 2014
Provision St Ann’s Primary School.
Everyone at St Ann’s Primary School is committed to, and passionate about, providing the conditions and opportunities to ensure all children, including those with additional needs, are fully included in all aspects of school life. This will help them to achieve their potential as a person and as a learner. We believe in the earliest possible intervention to support children.
All class teachers spend time getting to know the individual needs of their children and planning high quality learning opportunities to meet those needs. When planning for children the key question teachers will ask themselves is ‘What does this child need in order to thrive and succeed?
We are continually assessing, planning, implementing and reviewing our approach to teaching all children, this is especially important where we feel a child may have a special educational need. Over time this process becomes more personalised and is responsive to a growing understanding of the child’s strengths and gaps in learning.
If your child’s teacher feels that an intervention would support your child’s progress they will contact you. We believe in working partnership with parents gives each child the greatest chance of success.
Intervention might be carried out by a member of school staff -
· The class teaching assistant
· The class teacher
· A professional outside school
If you feel that your child is struggling at school in any way, or you are worried that they may have an additional need please talk to us we will do all we can to help.
